Overview

The Team Lead plays a pivotal leadership role within the Land Cover team. The Land Cover team is responsible for deriving a variety of land use land cover datasets from remotely sensed data sources, such as aerial imagery and LiDAR. These datasets are developed for various clients and are utilized in applications such as water resource management, habitat monitoring, and coastal resilience efforts. The Team Lead supervises a team of knowledgeable staff who perform production tasks required to move a project unit from data preparation to final delivery. Responsibilities of this role include facilitating technical workflow and programmatic process improvements, monitoring project benchmarks, providing oversight of data quality control (QC) and personnel management of analysts and other high level technical team members by tracking Key Performance Indicator (KPI) metrics and providing professional mentorship.

Work Environment:

  • Location: On-site at our NV5 Regional Office in Corvallis, OR
  • Setting: Working in an office daily. (Not Remote)

 

Responsibilities

Personnel Management: 

  • Mentorship and professional development for team members 
  • Timesheet and expense report approval 
  • Performance evaluation for direct reports including merit review process 
  • Hiring and onboarding support 
  • Identify cross training opportunities 
  • Identify team growth areas, strengths, and eliminate single points of dependency 
  • Conflict management 
  • Corrective actions (Performance Improvement Plans when needed) 
  • Mentorship of Associate Team Lead(s)/ succession plan 
  • Supports HR in answering questions regarding benefits, paid time off, etc. 

 

Resourcing: 

  • Supports proactive planning, forecasting, and communication of team resourcing needs 
  • Follows task prioritization based on contract deadlines and information from Project Managers 
  • Assists the IT department, office managers, and facility managers to allocate material resources for the team 

 

Production Supervision and oversight:  

  • Ensure workflows / processes exist and have quality control 
  • Workflow implementation oversight and task delegation 
  • Coordinate with technical experts to test workflow improvements 
  • Maintains tracking of data availability to ensure effective resource allocation 
  • Ensures adherence to project-specific best practices and standards

Project Management: 

  • Tracks project progress toward deadlines 
  • Ensures products stay within project scope 
  • Inform and guide procurement (subconsultants) 
  • Helping to manage stakeholder expectations 
  • Collaborate with PM to facilitate project retrospectives

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience   
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite 
  • 3+ years’ experience in a technical and professional GIS environment 
  • 1+ years’ experience leading and managing teams/tracking production 
  • Must be on-site in Corvallis, OR

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience 
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, ArcGIS Pro, and QGIS 
  • Experience with Python and R 
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or similar 
  • 4+ years’ experience in both a technical and professional GIS environment 
  • 2+ years’ experience leading and managing teams/tracking production 
  • Client relations experience
