Our Charlotte, North Carolina office has an opening for a Director of Engineering Design Services. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated licensed engineer to work across diverse disciplines, project types and clients. With an established reputation in the southeast and beyond, NV5 has long-standing relationships with City and State transportation agencies, and builders and developers. We work across a wide variety of project delivery mechanisms, and with 100 offices nationwide, we offer exposure to participate on exciting projects in North Carolina and across the country.

NV5’s Charlotte office works with both public and private clients in the transportation, institutional, and energy industries, as well as federal, state, and local governments.

NV5 is seeking a senior engineering professional who will be responsible for the management of NV5’s Charlotte office engineering design practice. Each group is led by experienced discipline leaders and the office has a strong backlog and a growing and energetic roster of talented professionals. The ideal candidate will have a background in public sector engineering serving state, county, or municipal clients in either Roadway, Water Resources, Environmental or Municipal engineering. Their duties will include focusing on growing NV5’s already strong presence in the Charlotte market by performing business development, recruiting staff, and providing technical oversight of the engineering department.

Responsibilities

The individual in this role will develop and manage a team of engineers and technicians and should be well-versed in the technical and procurement requirements of local agencies and authorities. Solid written and verbal communication skills are essential.

 

This role requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and strategic thinking to manage and ensure efficient and engineering operations.

Engineers at this level are actively involved in delivering services, business development, and staff management.


A summary of responsibilities follows:
 

  • Strategic planning and direction of the engineering department, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Managing and leading a team of engineers and related staff, including hiring, training, and professional development.
  • Overseeing project management, which includes planning, executing, and closing projects related to roadway design and construction.
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and codes pertaining to roadway construction and engineering.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, stakeholders, and other departments to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Budgeting and financial oversight, including cost estimation, resource allocation, and financial reporting.
  • Implementing best practices and continuous improvement strategies in engineering processes.
  • Providing technical expertise and guidance on complex engineering issues.

This role requires a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and strategic thinking to manage and grow the engineering design practice in the Charlotte market and beyond.

 

Qualifications

  • 10 years’ minimum experience
  • North Carolina PE preferred, or ability to obtain within 6 months
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license prior to employment.
