Entry and mid-level positions working primarily outside as part of a small team or crew. Chance to learn underground utility location as it pertains to the design of new roads, buildings, and utility master plans. Learn the mitigation of risk associated with the damage to underground utilities during construction from faulty design due to incomplete existing condition information. This opportunity provides the chance to work on GIS grade maps for cities, counties, and private institutions. All tools and equipment are provided along with a company vehicle. Primarily travel around the southeast with opportunities to travel to other NV5 offices in California, Oregon, Texas, Colorado, and Florida. The NV5 Utility Services Department likes to promote from within and will train the proper applicant.

Responsibilities

NV5 is seeking a full-time Utility Services Technician I for our Cary, NC office. This entry level position will assist the Utility Services Team on utility service locating projects. The most frequent and essential work activities include:

  • Assist technician II and technician III on locating projects.
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of vacuum excavation truck.
  • Collect utility data on excavation projects.
  • Provide support for utility services/survey staff as needed.

  • This position will be subject to outside environmental conditions. 
  • Work will primarily be in the field involving long term standing and frequent walking as well as include common hazards at construction and project sites.
  • Must be able to carry, lift and push/pull up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Must have the ability to see, smell, hear, talk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel and twist, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, sit, stand, and walk.
  • Weekend and overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required.
  • Additional physical duties may be required as necessary.
  • Overtime pay at time and half.
  • Per diem for overnight travel.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 0-1 years of utility designation experience
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license prior to employment
  • Ability to travel (up to 60% of the time)
  • Basic computer skills – can learn and understand new software
  • Familiarity with iPad or tablet, a plus
