The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading a team of survey technicians and assistants in conducting land surveys, boundary determinations, and topographic mapping. They are key in ensuring accurate and reliable data collection for various projects, from construction and land development to infrastructure planning and environmental assessments.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Management:

  • Lead and supervise a survey team in the field, ensuring efficient and accurate data collection.
  • Assign tasks to team members, provide guidance, and oversee their work.

Field Operations:

  • Operate and maintain surveying equipment, including total stations, GPS receivers, and data collectors.
  • Perform measurements and data collection for a variety of survey types, such as boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and construction staking.
  • Boundary Determination:
  • Research and review land records, legal documents, and historical survey data to determine property boundaries.
  • Establish boundary markers and reference points using precise surveying techniques.

Control Networks:

  • Set up and maintain control points and benchmarks for survey projects.
  • Conduct traverse surveys and establish control networks to ensure accurate data.
  • Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensure that the surveying team follows safety protocols and practices in the field.
  • Stay informed about local, state, and federal regulations related to land surveying and land use.

Data Processing:

  • Transfer collected field data to computer systems for further analysis and reporting.
  • Assist in the preparation of survey reports, maps, and legal descriptions.
  • Equipment Maintenance:
  • Maintain and calibrate surveying equipment to ensure accurate measurements.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor equipment repairs as needed.

Client and Stakeholder Communication:

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to understand project requirements and objectives.
  • Provide regular progress updates and communicate any issues encountered in the field.
  • Record Keeping:
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of survey activities, measurements, and data.
  • Prepare and preserve field notes and documentation.

Quality Control:

  • Ensure that survey data meets project specifications and quality standards.
  • Perform quality control checks on collected data and survey documentation.

Professional Development:

  • Stay current with advancements in surveying technology and best practices.
  • Pursue continuing education and training to maintain surveying certifications and licenses.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in surveying, geomatics, or a related field is preferred, but relevant work experience may be considered.
  • Surveyor-In-Training (SIT) or Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license is desirable.
  • Proven experience as a Survey Crew Chief or a similar role in the land surveying industry.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining surveying equipment and software.
  • Strong knowledge of surveying techniques, including boundary determination and topographic mapping.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills for working with team members and clients.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in the field.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • A Survey Crew Chief is a critical member of a surveying team, responsible for ensuring that survey projects are conducted accurately, safely, and in compliance with relevant regulations. They must possess strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and a commitment to maintaining the highest data quality and integrity standards.

The pay range for this California position is $40.00- $50.00 per hour; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
