Overview

We have an opportunity for a talented & ambitious engineer to join us as a Senior Substation Engineer. This position will be based out of our Phoenix, AZ office. It is preferable to be two days in the office, but a hybrid arrangement may be considered depending on qualifications.

As a Senior Substation Engineer, you will be a lead design engineer for new and ongoing substation projects. You will support multiple projects simultaneously given direction from a Substation Group Leader or Project Manager. You will be working in small project teams to provide exceptional customer service and quality deliverables to our clients.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

  • Prepare construction drawings, documents, calculations, and studies for medium and high voltage substation projects.
  • Responsible for technical delivery of power delivery engineering projects or tasks.
  • You will prepare calculations, studies, and reports for substation and power systems projects meeting internal and client standards and requirements.
  • Apply engineering design principles and practices including formulas.
  • Work with small project teams to execute substation projects.
  • Be self-motivated and focused on meeting client expectations and do what needs to be done to get the job completed.
  • Work together effectively with other highly productive team members.
  • Coordinate project information and status with client contacts.
  • Prepare budgetary estimates for proposals.
  • Responsible for providing weekly updates to Sr. team leaders and/or project managers on milestone progress, estimated completion dates including percent completion of activities and supporting information to monitor project progress.
  • Able to fulfill assignments that require independent judgment and evaluation.
  • Travel to client sites as needed (approximately 10% travel is anticipated).

Qualifications

  • Three (3) to ten (10) years of experience in the Substation/Power Delivery field.
  • Ability to interpret and apply standards including IEEE, IEC, NESC, and client standards.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple assignments under budget and time constraints
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to work and communicate effectively with team members, clients and management teams across different geographical locations and time zones.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated technical writing and reporting skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Experience with power system calculations (AC panel sizing, DC panel and battery sizing, Voltage Drop, Cable Sizing) is a plus.
  • High voltage substation design experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of substation physical equipment
  • Knowledge of Protection and Controls design
  • Experience with high voltage substation design (15kV through 500kV) activities such as preparing one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams, physical layouts, electrical elevations, plans (foundation, grounding, and raceway), and bills of materials including selection of non-standard equipment, etc. preferred
  • Capable of developing detailed construction documents and drawings based on concepts, verbal direction and/or sketches preferred.

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Proficiency with SKM, CAPE, or Aspen a plus
  • SCADA applications
  • Experience with renewables, storage, and microgrids
  • Substation Grounding Analysis to include proficiency with CDEGS is a plus
  • Generation Interconnection experience
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NESC and ANSI codes and standards applying to electrical systems
  • Ability to perform load flow, voltage drop, short circuit analysis and protective device coordination studies
  • Experience with the power systems modeling and calculations
  • Consulting experience preferred

Education/Certifications:

  • Degree Required: 4 year ABET accredited BSEE or equivalent
  • Professional Engineer (licensed in at least one state with ability to get licensed in Arizona upon hire, NCEES record holder preferred)
