Role:  Spectral Analytics Lead Analyst


Role Summary:  This position will work individually, and as part of a team focused on multispectral analysis to support data production and producing finalized data deliverables based on client requests. The ideal candidate has used multispectral imagery to classify tree species using machine learning. This individual provides oversight to technicians and other analysts in support of the team & leadership. They have a good understanding of all projects the team is working on and can fill any support role. The Lead Analyst performs rigorous QA/QC and assists in training of analysts and technicians. They produce consistent finished products and work to develop process efficiencies and improve methodologies. Lead Analysts are expected to work with clients, lead individual projects, and support overall program health.



Work Environment:

  • Location is flexible:  NV5 Portland, OR office or work from home considered
  • Travel < 15% of the time


  • Uses hyperspectral imagery to classify tree species using machine learning algorithms
  • Contributes to and builds NV5’s hyperspectral analytic program
  • Performs rigorous QA/QC and data finalization practices; performs QA/QC on processed data to ensure it meets accuracy requirements
  • Demonstrates leadership among production staff
  • Takes ownership of work within the team for execution and QA/QC
  • Can fulfill the role of Project Technical Lead – planning, resourcing, strategizing and developing task workflows for new projects
  • Reports project status, achievements, risks and solutions at weekly meetings
  • Able to modify and troubleshoot workflows and create improvements as needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with ArcMap, QGIS, ENVI or ERDAS Imagine
  • Experience with multispectral imagery datasets and analysis; and a greater familiarity with other remote sensing methodologies
  • Familiar with tree classification via machine learning algorithms
  • Maintains excellent data management and file organization practices
  • Can develop resolution and accuracy statistical analysis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates efficiency, accuracy in tasks, and organization
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and limited direction
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Ability to train others using clear communication and provided program tools
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with clients


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in a professional work environment
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience
  • Understanding of, and experience conducting spectral analysis for vegetation, soils or other relevant applications
  • Ability to communicate analysis results clearly and effectively
  • Experience with ArcMap, QGIS, ENVI or ERDAS Imagine, as well as experience or exposure to multispectral or hyperspectral images
  • Ability to troubleshoot software and solve problems without much oversight

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or higher
  • Knowledge of Python, SPSS, MatLab, R and using these languages with geographic data.
  • Familiarity with statistical methods for determining accuracy
  • Competency with machine learning algorithms
  • 3+ years’ experience in a technical, professional work environment
  • Proficiency in statistical modeling, machine learning
