Overview

Role:  Spectral Analytics Technical Specialist

 

Role Summary:

This position will leverage existing hyperspectral imaging knowledge and up to date science to streamline and improve image calibration techniques across large amounts of data. This will include improving and increasing speed of current processes which convert raw data to atmospherically corrected and Geo rectified reflectance imagery.

 

Analytical focused tasks include improving machine learning algorithms, as well as developing and overseeing production of vegetation and geologic products from hyperspectral and multispectral imagery. The technical specialist will also perform rigorous QA/QC and will assist in training other team members. This role oversees consistency across finished products and works to develop process efficiencies and improve methodologies. Communicating and relaying the production status of these processes will be a key component of this role’s responsibilities.

Work Environment:

  • Location is flexible:  NV5 Portland, OR office or work from home considered
  • Travel < 15% of the time

Responsibilities

  • Design & execute on analytic methodologies to meet customer objectives
  • Recommend satellite platforms and sensor technologies that best meet customer needs
  • Contribute to and build NV5’s hyperspectral analytic program & team
  • Work alongside sales staff & customers to recommend data & analytic approaches
  • Attend industry conferences to stay abreast of current-state technology
  • Reports to senior leadership on development progress
  • Scale analytic processes from pilot, to project, to recurring programs over large geographic areas
  • Demonstrate good judgment in the selection of the methods and techniques in problem resolution and troubleshooting
  • Improve and communicate data processes and workflows
  • Perform rigorous QA/QC and data finalization practices; performs QA/QC on processed data to ensure it meets accuracy requirements
  • Automate workflows and tasks as needed
  • Assist in the monitoring of technical KPIs (workflow velocity and throughput)
  • Initiate and improve processes and workflows

Competencies & Skills:

  • Ability to work well within a team/hybrid environment
  • Ability to apply creative solutions and strong problem-solving skills
  • Prior experience with machine learning & image interpretation of multispectral imagery
  • Tree identification & classification experience
  • Familiarity with statistical methods for determining accuracy
  • Understanding of sources of error in imagery datasets
  • Maintains excellent data management and file organization practices
  • Provides oversight of tasking to ensure benchmarks and priorities are met
  • Demonstrates efficiency, accuracy in tasks, and organization
  • Ability to train others (internal & External) using clear communication and provided program tools
  • Strong creative aptitude and ability to contribute to the development of the unique workflow methods

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience in remote sensing, forestry, or relevant field
  • Demonstrated experience with ArcMap, QGIS, ENVI or ERDAS Imagine, as well as experience or exposure to multispectral or hyperspectral images
  • Ability to integrate multiple data sources & time series analysis
  • Understanding of, and experience conducting spectral analysis for vegetation, soils or other relevant applications
  • Some scientific programming and algorithm development skills
  • Ability to communicate analysis results clearly and effectively
  • Effective technical writing skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Python, SPSS, MatLab, R
  • Demonstrated experience with coded geospatial applications and open-source development tools (python, gdal, shapely, scikit-learn) is preferred
  • 5+ years’ experience in a technical, professional work environment
  • Master’s degree in a science, math, forestry, ecology, or engineering program
  • Experience with statistical modeling and machine learning
  • Hyperspectral/multispectral data analysis techniques
  • Experience with scripting geographic data using Python
  • Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills
  • Experience with identifying plant species
  • Track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
