Archaeological Field Director

NV5 is seeking a full-time Archaeological Field Director to conduct field work out of our Alpharetta, Georgia or Cary, NC office to support cultural resources management and compliance for a variety of clients in the transportation, energy, land development, and municipal sectors. This position will manage day-to-day archaeological fieldwork at Phase I, II, and III levels of investigation, and assist in the processing of maps and data and cultural materials and other samples produced in the field. The Field Director will be capable of both overseeing archaeological technicians, as well as working alone on small projects. The Field Director will contribute to technical reports of investigations including Management Summaries, Archaeological Resource Identification/Survey, Testing and Mitigation Reports, Assessment of Effects, and Archival Research. The Field Director position will include extensive travel, both local and overnight, primarily in the Southeastern U.S. This individual will assist in developing Scopes of Work and other project planning and is expected to complete resulting project tasks within deadlines and budgets. The Field Director reports to the Project Archaeologist (Project Manager) or Senior Archaeologist (Principal Investigator). One or more positions may be filled through this announcement. The most frequent and essential work activities include:

• Conduct Section 106 and/or due diligence survey and archaeological resource identification primality for infrastructure, land development, and energy projects. As required, the Field Director will assist resource evaluation, and project effects assessment. This may include field assessments, use of background documentation (i.e. property records and archival research, county surveys, maps, site files, context studies, etc.), delineation of site boundaries using GIS mapping, and photography.
• Manage field projects including supervising archaeological technicians, preparing daily reports, and coordinating with a variety of colleagues, clients, agencies, and the public.
• Adhere to agency guidelines and project scopes, project schedules, and safety protocols.
• Maintain equipment and supplies.
• Process artifacts and samples, including cataloging and curation efforts.
• Assist in developing work plans and carrying out archaeological testing and mitigation efforts.
• Maintain effective and successful communication with project team, co-workers, and clients.
• Assist in business development and marketing efforts, as needed.

• Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA)-certified or RPA-eligible including Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field
• Five years of experience as a professional archaeologist, with one-year in a supervisory field role
• Knowledge of state and federal historic preservation regulations
• Proficiency in utilization of GPS equipment to assist with site boundary delineations and navigation
• Experience in scheduling and budgeting projects related to cultural resources investigations
• Experience with Microsoft Office and ArcGIS software
• Excellent communication skills
• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license prior to employment

• Work will be in both field and of office settings with some opportunities to be exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
• Fieldwork will involve long term standing, walking, and hand excavation as well as include common hazards at project sites.
• Filed work will require work in remote locations, often out-of-sight of other crew members and/or as a lone worker.
• Must be able to carry, lift and push/pull up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Must have the ability to see, smell, hear, talk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel and twist, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, sit, stand, and walk.
• Weekend and overtime work and/or overnight work and travel may be required.
• Additional physical duties may be required as necessary.
• Office and laboratory work will include working with fingers by picking, pinching, typing and grasping often with repetitive motion.
• Must have visual acuity for viewing a computer screen, the ability to talk, hear and sit for extended periods of time.
