NV5 is looking for a senior licensed Professional Civil Engineer with management experience to support the growth of a national clean transportation team. This position requires electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and EV supply equipment (EVSE) project experience including transmission and distribution related design, and structural working knowledge. Further experience requirements include EV charging station design, site planning and layout, grading and drainage design, erosion control, storm water management system design, utility design, permitting, American Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance review and design, construction observation, pavement assessment and rehabilitation, parking assessments and planning, and site/storm water inspections. Engineers in this role plan and conduct work that requires keen judgement and can devise new approaches to solve design problems and oversee assigned projects. They are increasingly well-versed in leading engineering teams in planning, engineering, design, construction, and utility industry consulting on complex projects for local and national clients. Solid written and verbal communication skills are essential.

 

Engineers at this level are actively involved in the process of bringing in work for the firm. They plan, schedule, and conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work a project of moderate scope, or in a part of a major project. Engineers perform work that may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. This position requires a broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and a good knowledge of related specialties. The Engineer may often serve as a contact for clients, contractors, and other professionals. They may also serve as a project leader and are expected to coordinate the team’s work. Must be able to give direction to less-experienced designers and engineers and assist in staff development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to engineering teams in the delivery of EV/EVSE infrastructure including planning, design, commissioning, and consulting on complex projects.
  • Demonstrate strong design capabilities such as:
  • Site planning, zoning, and special use permits; development of construction plans; off-site improvements; utility relocations; permitting; and construction phase services
  • Site design, horizontal control, mass grading, detailed grading design experience
  • Utilities design and storm drain system design skills
  • Drainage analysis
  • Public improvements design skills, including coordination with grading, drainage, and utilities design, for site specific development or subdivision work
  • Roadway design, public and private
  • Interpretation of field survey data
  • Collaborate across verticals to enable smooth project phase transitions
  • Track PE licensure by state to ensure necessary qualifications are met on a project-by-project basis.
  • Working knowledge of other renewable technologies that may be integrated into the design such as battery energy storage systems (BESS), Microgrids, and Solar PV
  • Be responsive and proactive, managing engineering activities to comply with budgets and schedules; identify departures or issues early to meet client expectations for technical excellence, budget, and schedule
  • Perform work that involves conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures, or equipment. Will be assigned to project teams and may make major design recommendations
  • Coordinate all design work with other team disciplines
  • Participate in training and mentoring staff as appropriate
  • Demonstrate proficiency in relevant software applications, such as Revit, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Electrical Design Suite, MicroStation with Substation or Plant add-in, ETAP or SKM, as well as business operations software including Microsoft Office
  • Design, manage, and assist in production of construction documents, including plans, specifications, and quantity takeoffs
  • Provide quality assurance checks on drawing packages and calculations prepared by others
  • Participate in business development activity including preparation of proposals for new work
  • Develop and maintain client relationships
  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge of relevant local codes and industry standards
  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge of appropriate electrical, building mechanical and plumbing systems
  • Analyze and solve construction and operational problems
  • As needed, produce sketches and system schematics for complicated design tasks
  • May attend construction meetings and produce site observation reports and final punch lists
  • May prepare addendums, proposal requests and change orders; initiate additional service requests and coordinate with project managers for client submittal
  • May prepare engineering opinion of probable cost for relevant systems and review construction manager/contractor cost estimates
  • Participate in technical and professional societies as applicable
  • Interpret and apply client, company, and field standards as needed

Qualifications

Education/Qualifications:

  • Current Professional Civil Engineering license/certification
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, such as General Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Construction Management
  • Positive attitude, ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in Consulting Engineering or Civil Engineering
  • Experience using Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project scheduling software
  • Master’s degree in relevant field such as General Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Business Administration
  • At least 5 years’ experience managing and mentoring staff
  • PMP certification preferred
  • Professional engineering license registration in multiple states

Metrics:

  • Evaluation is based, in part, on the accurate and timely completion of work
  • Attends in-house seminars and educational opportunities outside of the offices

Physical Demands:

  • This position requires sitting for extensive periods of time
  • Must be able to visually interpret complex drawings

The pay range for this California position is $150,000.00- $180,000.00 per year; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
