Distribution designers at this level are expected to be responsible for the overall supervision of the projects assigned to them and will use prescribed methods, standards and best practices to perform specific and daily assignments designing projects. Incumbent works as part of teams of drafters, designers and engineers working on electric projects such as underground and overhead circuits.


This role requires the ability to work well with staff in multiple locations and prioritize work tasks. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential. Designers are expected to use their education, experience, intelligence and common sense to resolve engineering issues and complete assigned tasks with increasing acuity. Incumbents are active participants in proposal work and client relationship management for the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Use computer-aided drafting tools such as AutoCAD & Civil 3D, CADWorx, Revit, MicroStation, AutoCAD Inventor, Bentley Substation, and/or Solidworks, as well as technical handbooks, utility standards, tables, and calculators to create relevant drawings and 3D models of facilities
  • Research, specify and recommend commercially available equipment
  • Make major design recommendations as part of a project team, and may participate in client presentations
  • Calculate costs and time schedules for proposed work
  • Assign duties and schedules to team members, may be responsible for all phases of a project
  • Produce sketches and system schematics for complicated design tasks such as layout of mechanical or electrical equipment rooms
  • Document existing conditions and perform troubleshooting
  • Develop details as required for a specific project
  • Edit master specification sections to be project specific
  • Assist in development of technical competence of project team members
  • Support project managers in maintaining client relationships
  • Develop control sequences for temperature control systems
  • Attend construction progress meetings to solve non-routine technical issues and produce reports
  • Meet client and NV5’s requirements and standards
  • Manage and maintain design records and files
  • Complete as-built drawings
  • Begin learning how to calculate costs and time schedules for proposed work
  • Able to fulfill assignments that require independent judgment and evaluation
  • Able to work independently with minimal or no supervision
  • Some travel to client sites as needed (expected to be no more than 30% of time)
  • Assist in preparation of technical papers for submittal to regional/national publications
  • Research non-routine code issues and obtain interpretations from code officials
  • Review addendums, proposal requests, and change orders
  • Initiate additional service requests and include appropriate project manager for client submittal
  • Prepare engineering opinion of probable cost for mechanical or electrical systems and review construction manager/contractor cost estimates
  • Specify portions of the engineering system from catalogs or other resources. This typically involves the application of special knowledge to design effective engineering solutions
  • Review drawings for compliance with company and industry standards and quality
  • Proficient using computer spreadsheets and design programs for engineering analysis and equipment selections
  • Gain a more advanced working knowledge of electric/gas utility safe work practices and as appropriate for distribution roles, demonstrate knowledge by working in and around underground electrical vaults with a utility-authorized Qualified Worker
  • May be asked to act as Project Manager for specific technical projects

Qualifications

Education/Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of AutoCAD, Revit, MicroStation, and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D experience
  • Associate’s Degree in Engineering, Architectural or Design Technologies, Mechanical or Electrical Technology or relevant field, or equivalent training and experience
  • Positive attitude, able to collaboratively work with others
  • Proficient using MS Office Suite and other relevant software At least 5 years of experience in the design of electric distribution projects in both overhead and underground configurations
  • Experience preparing bills of materials and construction units with software such as SAP and Maximo
  • Electric distribution role candidates must demonstrate a good understanding of both OH and UG construction, poles, conduits, substructures, cable and wire types, and connections
  • Able to physically access utility sites, some of them remote
  • Knowledgeable of relevant industry standards for design and construction
  • Valid driver’s license

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Background as an electrical designer or planner with SDG&E or other comparable large electric utility
  • Some knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project
  • Solid working knowledge of utility safe work practices strongly preferred
  • Experience with PLS-CADD or O-Calc overhead design software is strongly preferred for electric distribution roles
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architectural or Design Technologies, Mechanical or Electrical Technology or relevant field
  • Participate in technical and professional societies
  • Proficient knowledge of design programs

Metrics:

  • Performance metrics include accurate completion of work in a timely manner
  • Attends in-house seminars and educational opportunities outside of the offices

Physical Demands:

  • This position requires sitting for extensive periods of time
  • Must be able to visually interpret complex drawings
  • This position may require field work, such as hiking and working with utility linemen. Hikes for pole reviews can be as long as 5 miles
