The Certified Building Official Organize, Directs, Plans Supervises and coordinates the work of the Building Division and ensures compliance with laws and regulations applicable to building construction and maintenance. The position exercises direct supervision over professional and technical staff in the building Division. The Certified Building Official receives general direction from the Community Development Director and/or Deputy Community Development Director and works collaboratively with other division managers within CDD.


  • Have knowledge of principles and practices of the Uniform Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical Codes, other uniform codes, Title 24, laws relating to disabled access, and pertinent State and City codes and ordinances and regulations.
  • Have knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, personnel and budget management
    Be a problem-solver, basing solutions on thoughtful analysis, a collaborative approach, and reasoned conclusions, and be able to present solutions, alternatives, and implications for recommendations and actions.
  • Possess the ability to analyze, interpret and check complex plans, specifications, calculations, laws, and regulations.
  • Have knowledge of the principles of structural design, plan checking, building inspection, architectural plan review, energy standards, and handicapped access.
  • Work effectively with and confer with architecture, contractors, and others concerning building code provisions and construction methods.
  • Can see situations from many perspectives.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing in a variety of situations and settings, while maintaining poise and calm.
  • Be proactive in identifying and solving potential problems before they arise.
  • Exercise excellent judgement, knowing when to seek consultation with others versus making an independent decision.
  • Desire to contribute to a positive work environment that fosters motivation, collaboration, coaching, and staff engagement.
  • Be passionate about community engagement and providing the highest quality of customer service.


  • The equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in structural, mechanical, or civil engineering, architecture, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a Building Official.


  • Possession of a Building Official Certificate issued by the Conference of American Building Officials.
