NV5, one of the fastest growing full service engineering practices in the United States, is seeking an exceptional Seller-Doer Principal -level Geotechnical Engineer to join our fast growing geotechnical/material testing practice in San Diego. In that position, the preferred candidate will be responsible for a group of about 25 engineers, geologists, inspectors and technicians. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and well versed on leading and contributing to engineering teams in the delivery of geotechnical engineering design and material testing and special inspections. Success in this position requires a person who can adapt to a variety of personalities and business conditions. The person must possess skills in problem solving and critical thinking, and must be steadfast in the execution of assigned duties. The person needs to be an effective leader and collaborator with an ability to build and motivate teams.


  • Group Leader: Responsible and accountable for the technical and operational performance, financial performance, and growth of the CQA Group in the San Diego area
  • Project Management: Manage projects from inception through completion and have primary responsibility for managing client expectations and ensuring that delivery meets expectations. Manage projects to meet client expectations for technical excellence, budget and schedule.
  • Business Development activities: Implement a business plan, be active/known in the San Diego A/E community, develop and maintain client relationships, bring in new clients, assist in preparation of proposals.
  • Participate in training and mentoring of staff.
  • Conduct annual and interim performance reviews. Monitor and assess progress toward performance goals.
  • Certifications: Ensures that all accreditations and certifications of the laboratory and staff are maintained and up to date.


  • BS in civil engineering with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering (Required)
  • MS or PhD in Geotechnical Engineering (Preferred)
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience as a Registered PE (Required)
  • Existing client relationships with a proven track record of business development.
  • Past experience with P/L Statement.
  • Working knowledge of Deltek is a plus.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, think creatively, and problem solve.
  • Demonstrated experience with project planning and writing/reviewing technical specifications and reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of building codes and construction industry standards. DSA, OSHPD experience is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of standard geotechnical software such as slope/W, LPile, Liquefy, etc…
  • Experience with forensic engineering is a plus.


  • Registered Civil Engineer in California (Required)
  • Registered Geotechnical Engineer in California (Preferred)
