Our Arlington, VA branch office is seeking a Commissioning Engineer.  In this role, you’ll work within a team to deliver Commissioning service projects to a variety of Government, Commercial, Higher Education, Healthcare, and Industrial Clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. 


The successful candidate will have the following demonstrated skills and qualifications:  the ability to understand systems level building systems engineering and be able to demonstrate an understanding of integrated building infrastructure systems and building automation systems.  The person we are seeking must be able to work effectively within a collaborative team environment as well as be an individual contributor.  Direct interface with client representatives, client consultants and contractors will be part of the work environment with the expectation that “trusted advisor’ relationships will be created and maintained.


This person will evaluate, select, and apply standard commissioning techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications and serve as primary client contact while directing or conducting systems functional performance testing. 



  • Contribute to engineering teams in the delivery of mechanical systems commissioning, energy and consulting on complex projects for local and national clients.
  • Perform construction observations, develop functional test plans and execute tests for a wide variety of mechanical, electrical, life safety and controls systems.
  • Execute engineering/energy assessments and studies for national clients
  • Execute design/energy projects for industrial, institutional and commercial clients for NV5
  • Produce design documents for construction.
  • Assist in managing small to large projects to meet client expectations for technical excellence, budget and schedule.
  • Maintain effective communication with clients, contractors and other project team members.
  • Up to 25% travel may be required for project work, training and inter-office business.
  • Promote business development thru client retention activities


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering – PE a plus, LEED Accredited Professional a plus.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in building MEP systems design, energy studies and commissioning for large complex buildings.
  • Experience in diagnosing and solving construction and operational problems.
  • Experience managing design, energy services and commissioning projects and project resources to a pre-determined scope, fee and schedule.
  • Knowledge of building codes and construction industry standards.
  • Familiarity with building mechanical, electrical and life safety systems operations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD is a plus.
