Provide health physics functions in support of Hanford Site worker safety and health programs such as, but not limited to, radiation hazard assessments, recommending and implementing radiation controls, responding to radiological events, and monitoring and evaluating occupational exposures for compliance with applicable radiation protection standards.


  • Understand, adhere to, and apply requirements and guidance specific to radiological protection/safety.
  • Apply Department of Energy radiological safety requirements, evaluate and interpret current and proposed regulations to determine compliance, and assist in implementation of new or changing requirements.
  • Provide radiological safety related technical support, technical assistance and guidance on a variety of radiological control problems, recommending corrective actions (including changes in the work environment) when necessary. 
  • Define radiation safety problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions, and make decisions within the boundaries of established procedures and using best professional judgment.
  • Research, develop and implement technical basis documents, policies, and procedures including, but not limited to: inspection standards, safe-work methods, decontamination procedures, and radiological emergency procedures.
  • Plan, conduct, evaluate, and document radiological surveys for demonstrating compliance with dose or risk-based regulations or standards.
  • Recommend and select from a wide variety of radiological instrumentation for specific measurement situations.



  • Bachelor’s degree in health physics or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of health physics with directly relevant field experience. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of 10 CFR 835 and DOE Radiological Control Standard, DOE-STD-1098-2008.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in the field of radiological As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) planning as described in 10 CFR 835.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical support, procedure and technical basis document development, and implementation of radiation protection programs under 10 CFR 835.
  • Mid-level experience in a variety of office software such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint. 
  • Must be able to perform multiple job tasks simultaneously to effectively manage assignments and support initiatives. 
  • Ability to work under limited direction and apply professional judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and accomplishing assigned work.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Multi Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM) clearances. 
  • Good working knowledge of radiological work place monitoring.
  • Working background in internal/external dosimetry.
  • Mid-level experience in a variety of office software such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint. 
  • Previous experience with (or desire to learn) health physics software and radiological models, such as MCNP, Microshield, ORIGEN and ResRad, is preferred.


  • Certified Health Physicist or eligibility for certification is preferred.
