RDK, an NV5 Company, has a need for a Senior Fire Protection Designer.

The basic function of the Sr. Fire Protection Designer position is to design and engineer a majority of the plans and specifications on a number of concurrent projects with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Performs calculations as well as operates various software packages related to the design as directed by engineers, senior engineers, or project managers. This typically involves the application of special knowledge to design effective engineering systems/solutions.
  • Prepares studies, performs field surveys, documents existing conditions, and/or recommends design solutions.
  • Obtains field data by conducting field visits to project sites both in and out of state. Makes assessments of existing field conditions using knowledge of engineering systems (mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing), designs, and operations. Documents existing conditions as required. May require occasional overnight travel.
  • Communicates with clients and architects to resolve issues with engineering designs.
  • Obtains knowledge of building codes and stays current with building code changes. 
  • May occasionally take an engineer’s rough plan mark-ups to create final design documents.
  • Works with senior engineers to determine the most appropriate concept for the engineering system being designed or re-designed. 
  • Using specialty knowledge, is able to specify portions of the engineering system from catalogs or other resources. This typically involves the application of knowledge specific to the type of design being worked on to find effective engineering solutions. 
  • Performs CAD functions proficiently in discipline and will use AutoCAD MEP and Revit software to transfer design concepts to a format (i.e. .dwg, .pdf, .rvt, etc.) acceptable to the client, architect, and/or construction company. 

Qualifications

  • Must have 7-10 years of experience in fire protection design and related coursework; 2-year degree preferred.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the engineering principles in the discipline.
  • Must be proficient in AutoCad MEP, Revit, and the operation of a computer.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
