NV5 has an immediate opening for a Telecommunications Group Manager for our San Diego, CA location. This is a leadership role and is accountable for the technical and operational performance, financial performance, and growth of the Telecommunication department within the Southern California Region. The Telecommunications Group Leader carries out these responsibilities by providing leadership in four “Focus Areas” -- Product Delivery; Staff Development; Financial Management; and Sales. For each of the four Focus Areas, the position demands close collaboration with others at all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assign and monitor the performance of technical resources within the Group 
  • Coordinate resource availability with contract backlog; borrow or loan resources as required to ensure a balance of resources and backlog 
  • Manage the total flow of work through the Group’s workforce, ensuring compliance with client expectations of cost, schedule, and quality
  • Support, ensure the application of, and provide for improvements to, corporate technical standards 
  • Provide leadership in developing Group-specific policies and procedures
  • Develop, maintain, and apply rigorous program of quality assurance and quality control; be responsible for quality breaches; perform project post-mortems; design and apply corrective actions as required 
  • Maintain rigorous program of risk management
  • Serve as Telecommunications Subject Matter Expert


Success in this Focus Area demands collaboration and cooperation with Regional Leadership team and Telecommunications Peers, Project Management and Practice Development Leaders.

 

Staff Development

  • Participate in the development of annual hiring plan as part of annual budgeting process 
  • Participate in Group hiring requisition process 
  • Assist with requisition development 
  • Participate in interviewing and candidate selection process 
  • Review and approve offer criteria 
  • Assist with the onboarding of new employees 
  • Develop staff resources in support of the requirements of the Function, Discipline, Service Lines and/or Market Sectors
  • Set and Manage Group Goals in support of Regional and Corp Goals 
  • Manage resources to ensure Group goals are achieved 
  • Train, motivate, and provide mentoring and professional development for Group staff 
  • Manage individual employee performance review process for Group staff 
  • Conduct annual and interim performance reviews 
  • Monitor and assess progress toward performance goals 
  • Provide ongoing constructive feedback on individual performance 
  • Provide recommendations for annual compensation adjustments 
  • Provide corrective programs up to and including termination as required to maintain desired organizational standards 


Success in this Focus Area demands collaboration and cooperation with Corporate Human Resources and Practice Development Leaders

Financial Management

  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of timesheets by Group staff
  • Ensure monthly compliance with budget values for individual and group utilization 
  • Monitor progress of projects within the Group 
  • Develop change orders and ensure cost control within the Group


Success in this Focus Area demands collaboration and cooperation with Corporate Finance and Practice Development Leaders

Sales

  • Work closely with Practice Development Leaders to develop clients in Telecommunications market
  • Monitor project opportunities for the assigned Group 
  • Monitor Go/No Go deliberations for Group opportunities, participate as appropriate 
  • Participate in proposal preparation, as appropriate 
  • Participate in consultant selection interview preparation and rehearsals 
  • Participate in inter-geography pursuits as appropriate 
  • Monitor sales goal compliance 


Success in this Focus Area demands collaboration and cooperation with Practice Development Leaders and Corporate Administrative Services

Qualifications

Success in this position requires a person who can adapt to a variety of personalities and business conditions. The person must possess skills in problem solving and critical thinking, and must be steadfast in the execution of assigned duties. The person needs to be an effective leader and collaborator with an ability to build and motivate teams, and a persuasive negotiator who can secure favorable terms with internal and external constituencies. The person must have an ability to manage conflict.


Education/Qualifications:
  • At least 20 years of total experience in the telecommunications field, with experience in management of large telecommunications projects related to fiber, copper, microwave, and cell sites 
  • Ten years in a management and leadership role on both overhead and underground telecommunications projects 
  • Strong preference given to candidates with experience working in the public utility environment
  • Demonstrated broad experience in managing all aspects of telecommunications projects, including planning, analysis, design, construction, operations, maintenance, facility management, and asset management


Certifications/Licenses:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, facilities management, asset management, sustainability, or related field
  • Or demonstrated competency through work experience in one of these fields.
