The Designer II, (Lead Designer) is expected to be responsible for the overall supervision of those projects which are assigned to them, to assure that the project conforms to the commitments the firm has made to the client, and that the project is completed within the allocated period of time and within the budget. The Lead Designer also actively participates in bringing work into the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Using prescribed methods, performs specific and daily assignments of a Lead Designer. Applies standard practices and techniques in situations, adjusts and gathers data, and follows operations through a series of related steps or processes.
  • Performs a variety of technical tasks, including:
  • Proficiency expected in the use of computers for design and CAD applications.
  • Proficient use of computer spreadsheets and design programs for engineering analysis and equipment selections.
  • Train staff in use of computer spreadsheets and design programs.
  • May participate in preparing proposals and client presentations.
  • Initiate additional service requests and turn over to Project Manager for submittal to client.
  • Calculate costs and time schedules for proposed work.
  • Organize and maintain project files.
  • Assigned to a project team and makes design recommendations.
  • Document existing conditions and perform troubleshooting.
  • Prepare the drawings of designs he or she has originated.
  • Coordinate clearance requirements with other design professionals.
  • Incorporate design concepts from schematic design into design development and work with project team to produce construction documents.
  • Research non-routine code issues and obtain interpretations from code officials.
  • Develop details as required for a specific project.
  • Edit master specification sections to be project specific.
  • Develop control sequences for temperature control systems.
  • Review drawings for compliance with company and industry standards and quality.
  • Prepare engineering opinion of probable cost for mechanical or electrical systems and review construction manager/contractor cost estimates.
  • Attend construction progress meetings to solve non-routine technical issues and produce reports.
  • Review addendums, proposal requests and change orders.
  • Review submittal and RFI’s.
  • Produce final punch lists.
  • Maintain liaison with the client after project completion.
  • Involved in developing and maintaining company design and production standards.
  • Actively participate in technical presentations to both in-house staff and educational opportunities outside of the office.
  • Participate in technical and professional societies.
  • Other duties as necessary and assigned.

Qualifications

  • Recommended: 6-8 years of demonstrated design experience.
  • Associate Degree or Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Technology from an accredited technical college
    Or
  • Recommended: 11-15 years professional experience.
  • Diploma from a Drafting/ CAD school
  • Expertise in computer operation for engineering design programs and computer aided drafting.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical or electrical system design.
  • Understanding and knowledge of applicable design codes
  • Must be able to communicate with a variety of individuals; must be able to follow verbal and written. instructions/directions and respond to inquiries
  • Must be able to travel to work- sites as needed or required.
