Director – Gas Services

 

The Director of Gas Services in the Power Delivery Group reports to the Vice President of Gas Services. The Director is responsible and accountable for operational performance and results of the assigned group within the Power Delivery organizational structure.

 

This role requires a high degree of creativity, foresight and mature judgment in devising strategies to ensure growth of programs enterprise-wide and to identify and implement process improvements. Incumbents provide inspirational leadership by attracting, retaining, motivating, and developing high-caliber talent. In addition, incumbents cultivate a constructive workplace culture that encourages collaboration, teamwork, positive attitude, and provides ongoing improvement to the quality of services provided to clients. 

Responsibilities

  • Responsibilities include providing leadership in four high-level focus area: Product Delivery, Staff Development, Financial Management, and Business Development.
  • Groups consist of up to 50+ individuals affiliated with a function, discipline, service line, or market sector.
  • For each focus area, this position demands close collaboration with others at all levels of the organization.
  • Establish operational and technical performance targets, then monitor achievement toward those targets, taking corrective action when needed
  • Analyze current operational processes and performance, recommending solutions for improvement when necessary
  • Analyze financial data and ensure financial goals are being met
  • Collaborate with Power Delivery management, other Directors, and the marketing staff to identify and analyze strategically aligned business development opportunities
  • Cultivate effective relationships with existing and potential new clients
  • Address customer satisfaction issues
  • Drive project profitability through Group Managers and Project Managers by maintaining proper qualified staffing levels for project delivery within budget and on schedule
  • Understand and abide by industry set laws and standards
  • Evaluate and analyze utilization and performance by taking corrective action when needed
  • Develop Group Managers by providing coaching, feedback, and training so that they are knowledgeable, competent, and effective leaders
  • Oversee the development and training of assigned personnel and provide information to guide opportunities for advancement
  • Foster a constructive workplace environment
  • Identify and develop opportunities in new marketplaces for Power Delivery that align with the company’s market and service sectors
  • Develop a comprehensive multi-year business plan for the Gas Services organization.
  • Support the developments of sales and business development plans for Sales team and doer-sellers
  • Generate sales leads through prospecting, networking, and leveraging company-developed marketing programs
  • Effectively engage internal resources to develop sales strategies, presentations, and plans
  • Develop key client relationships in new marketplaces, schedule regular meetings with clients to monitor and maintain satisfaction levels
  • Hire and train new employees to support new marketplaces and clients
  • Identify business partners and subcontractors for the mutual pursuit of opportunities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering is required.
  • Current registration by the State of California as a Professional Engineer and a willingness to register in other states is required.
  • Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) required.
  • 15+ years of experience in the natural gas field, such as gas engineering & design, construction management, facilities management, project management, sustainability, commissioning, or related field with progressive responsibilities.
  • 10+ years of experience working directly with natural gas utilities as a project manager, construction manager, utility manager, designer, engineer or other role(s) directly related to gas utility engineering, design and/or construction.
  • At least 10 years of experience in a leadership role leading a team of 10+ individuals.
  • Familiarity with the standards and quality demanded by gas utility clients is required. This role requires experience with quality assurance checks in order to uphold high internal and external quality standards.
  • Experience expanding services to new regions and establishing remote operations is highly desirable.
  • Experience managing business unit financials. P&L understanding is highly desirable.
  • Willingness to travel to other NV5 or client offices on short notice, as project needs or client demands require.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Microsoft Project, and other relevant software, including any technical software as needed.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, highly organized, and detail oriented with exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Finance or Business Administration is highly desirable
  • Valid driver’s license

Metrics:

  • Evaluation is based on, in part on the timely, accurate completion of work.
  • Attends in-house seminars and educational opportunities outside of the offices.
  • Participates in relevant professional associations.
  • Participates as a key contributor in Power Delivery meetings at multiple levels.
  • Is aware of future project resource requirements based on marketing efforts and successes within Power Delivery.
  • Demonstrates on an annual basis that the assigned group consistently:
  • Delivers products that conform to company standards and meet or exceed client standards.
    • Balances staff in terms of experience and expertise that collaborates constructively and is highly motivated.
    • Meets budgeted utilization goals and works cooperatively with others at all levels of the organization.
    • Executes smooth interface between planning and execution, thus cultivating an environment of efficiency and predictability.

The pay range for this California position is $180,000- $220,000 per year; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. This information is provided per California Senate Bill 1162.
