Overview

We are seeking a skilled and driven Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in Energy Efficiency and Mechanical design for high-rise buildings. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with steam and hydronic systems, energy-efficient retrofits, and the technical expertise to review legacy infrastructure. You’ll be responsible for load calculations, field investigation, system assessments, and detailed mechanical design.

This role offers the opportunity to work on some of NYC’s most iconic and complex buildings—balancing practical solutions with high-performance design goals.

NV5 provides engineering and consulting services to public and private sectors, delivering solutions through five business verticals: Construction Quality Assurance, Infrastructure, Energy, Program Management, and Environmental. With offices nationwide and abroad, NV5 helps clients plan, design, build, test, certify, and operate projects that improve the communities where we live and work.

As engineers, architects, construction/program managers, environmental professionals and beyond, we play a significant role in shaping our communities through the services we provide. We are looking for passionate, driven individuals to join our team focused on Delivering Solutions and Improving Lives.

Responsibilities

• Perform field assessments of existing mechanical systems, including steam distribution, hydronic systems, airside equipment, and controls—often in buildings with incomplete or 40+ year-old documentation.
• Interpret and update legacy mechanical drawings and system schematics.
• Conduct HVAC load calculations using Carrier HAP, with a strong understanding of building diversity and NYC climate profiles.
• Design HVAC and steam system upgrades for high-rise buildings, including central plant, boiler plants, and terminal unit integration.

Qualifications

• 4–10 years of relevant experience in MEP consulting or building systems engineering.
• Strong working knowledge of steam, chilled water, hot water, and air distribution system design.
• Experience working on high-rise residential, commercial, or mixed-use buildings, preferably in New York City.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD (required), Revit (preferred), and Carrier HAP (or similar load calc tools).
• Familiarity with reviewing and modifying older building documentation.
• Strong knowledge of ASHRAE, IECC, and NYC-specific codes and standards.
• Ability to work in the field, on foot.

Preferred Qualifications:
• PE license (NY/CT/NJ preferred) or active progress toward licensure.
• Experience with building decarbonization and compliance strategies under NYC’s climate legislation.
• Knowledge of controls optimization, sequences of operation, and BAS upgrades
