The Survey Chief of Parties is responsible for supervising, training, and mentoring survey crew members, ensuring safety protocols and company policies are followed, and coordinating with project managers, engineers, designers, and clients to understand project scopes, timelines, and deliverables. This role also involves managing surveying instruments and tools, being a point of contact for clients and field crews, and conducting field visits to ensure projects are on track.

Responsibilities

 

 

Supervision and Training: 

  • Supervise, train, and mentor survey crew members, including rodmen, instrument men, and other field staff. 
  • Ensure all employees follow safety protocols and company policies. 

Project Coordination: 

  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, designers, and clients to understand project scopes, timelines, and deliverables. 
  • Be a point of contact for clients and field crews. 

Equipment Management: 

  • Manage the allocation, maintenance, and calibration of surveying instruments and tools. 
  • Ensure all equipment is in good working order and crews have the necessary tools. 
  • Ensure equipment is properly calibrated and monitored for possible update needs. 

Field Support: 

  • Be a resource for field crews, providing additional data, supplies, or assistance with unexpected situations during field operations. 
  • Conduct field visits at the start of projects to plan and ensure projects are moving according to plans and budgets. 
  • Able to assist and communicate for last-minute scheduling conflicts or illnesses 

Client Interaction: 

  • Able to talk to all clients and FCAs to check their satisfaction with performance and identify any areas for improvement. 
  • Gather information about upcoming projects that align with the company’s capabilities. 

Team Leadership: 

  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the survey team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment. 
  • Assign tasks, coordinate workflow, and ensure the team's adherence to project timelines. 

Project Planning and Coordination: 

  • Strong project management skills to oversee multiple survey projects simultaneously. 
  • Provide valuable input for proposals. 
  • Collaborate with project managers, project engineers, and clients to develop project plans, including defining objectives, scope, and resource requirements. 
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings, contributing technical insights and expertise. 

Field Operations: 

  • Oversee and participate in surveying activities, including measurements, boundary determinations, and construction staking. 
  • Operate and maintain advanced surveying equipment, ensuring accurate and precise data collection. 

Boundary Surveying: 

  • Ability to assist with boundary research, including in-depth research on land records, legal documents, and historical surveys to determine property boundaries. 
  • Provide field guidance on boundary and easement issues. 
  • Understands how record maps are prepared and the techniques used in order to complete field boundary procedures. 

Control Networks and Topographic Mapping: 

  • Establish and maintain control points, benchmarks, and traverse surveys for accurate data collection. 
  • Lead topographic surveys and mapping projects, ensuring comprehensive and precise results. 

Quality Control and Compliance: 

  • Implement and enforce quality control measures to ensure accuracy and completeness of survey data. 
  • Stay abreast of industry standards, regulations, and best practices, ensuring compliance in all surveying activities. 

Data Processing and Reporting: 

  • Oversee the transfer of field data to computer systems and collaborate with survey technicians in data processing. 
  • Assisting project manager with survey reports, maps, and legal descriptions for completeness. 

Client Communication: 

  • Act as a key point of contact for certain clients, providing updates on project progress, addressing concerns, and ensuring client satisfaction. 
  • Participate in client meetings, offering technical expertise and insights. 

Record Keeping: 

  • Maintain meticulous records of survey activities, field notes, and documentation. 
  • Ensure the proper archiving and storage of survey data for future reference. 

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in surveying and managing survey crews. 
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and company policies. 
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills. 
  • Proficiency in managing and maintaining surveying instruments and tools. 
  • Ability to conduct field visits and ensure project adherence to plans and budgets. 
  • Overnight travel may be required 
  • Valid CA Driver’s License 

The Survey Chief of Parties is a key figure in surveying operations, contributing not only technical expertise but also leadership to ensure the success of projects and the professional development of the survey team. 

 

The pay range for this California position is $45.00hr-$60.00 per hour; however, base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
