Overview

NV5 is seeking a USCG Licensed operator to operate and support our hydrographic survey vessels. The successful candidate will be highly organized with previous experience in vessel operations management and have demonstrated strong leadership skills to navigate safely. The Senior operator will coordinate all maintenance associated with the vessel, shipyard repairs, shop and facility assistance, and mobilization and demobilization of survey projects with the Vessel Master. The candidate will assist in creating a strong safety culture on the vessel and ensure that all crew members are working safely and clearly understand their duties. The Senior Operator will report to the Marine Operations Manager. While the vessels are primarily located in Morehead City, NC, the Senior Operator will be expected to travel for an extended time based on the requirements of the project’s scope.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for operating, assisting, and maintaining a major research vessel to support oceanographic function
  • Leads deck operations
  • Operates various vessel machinery and performs maintenance
  • Ensure docking, undocking, and mooring is completed safely
  • Ensures all pre-departure checklists, crew orientation, and safety drills
  • Housekeeping – Assist in maintaining an organized vessel with safe practices
  • Follow all workplace and job safety procedures
  • Complete safety certification as required
  • Communicate operation and project information as required
  • Enter maintenance work in the internal system as directed
  • Perform other duties as required by the project team
  • Ensure that all work is completed in accordance with Company safety policies
  • Navigate the vessel safely
  • Deploy and retrieval survey gear safely
  • Conduct JSA (Job Safety Analysis) safety meetings to ensure that all crew members are trained and aware of their duties and responsibilities.
  • Ensure required daily logs are documented and submitted in the company system
  • Provide instructions and information to crew members, including Management system, Vessel Station Bill, Standing Orders, and all emergency response plans
  • Conduct drills with all crew members
  • Must meet USCG physical requirements
  • Must be able to work 12 hours shifts and up to 21 consecutive days on a project
  • Must be able to climb steep stairs, sit or stand for long periods of time and work in all weather conditions

 

Qualifications

Education / Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic computer skills include word, spreadsheets, emails, Gdrive, SharePoint, OneDrive, and navigation software
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously
  • Some marine experience on research vessels or equivalent
  • Knowledge and ability to ensure adherence to Coast Guard rules and regulations, and other federal and local laws and regulations
  • Basic working knowledge of all vessel’s systems and their proper maintenance: diesel engines, winches (hydraulic, electrical), fire suppression, communication, and navigational systems

Certifications / Licenses:

  • Special licenses, registration, or certification USCG Master license (100 Gross Tons, Near Coastal, Great Lakes, Inland Waters—minimum)
  • Valid driver's license - US Citizen
  • Hold or be capable and willing to obtain:
    • Valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential)
    • STCW or equivalent – First Aid, CPR
