Overview

NV5 Geospatial is currently seeking an experienced Hydrographer to be based in Morehead City, North Carolina.   The Hydrographer I is a leader of hydrographic surveys from project development through delivery.  Experience in hydrographic specifications, practical application of survey fundamentals, and understanding of hydrographic principles should be demonstrated. 

 

The Hydrographer can perform and oversee the planning, acquisition, processing, and reporting for a range of hydrographic surveys including, but not limited to, multibeam, singlebeam, and side scan sonar.  The right candidate will qualify data through standard QC processes and prepares or supervises the data products and deliverables. The Hydrographer leads survey crews with minimal direction and provides support and training to field crew. 

 

This role is a field role and may require a significant amount time spent in the field, on a vessel, and may take place in inclement and extreme weather. Responsibilities may require an adjusted work schedule, long days, and evening/weekend hours to meet deadlines. Travel is required. The Hydrographer will regularly interact and collaborate with our team, so good communication skills are critical to success.

Responsibilities

  • Lead hydrographic surveys from project development through delivery
  • Direct acquisition and oversight of teams collecting data using hydrographic and/or geophysical survey instrumentation
  • Ensure daily and overall QC is performed, assessed, and communicated with feedback
  • Assist in project development, survey estimation, and resource identification
  • Prepare and coordinate project kick-off, progress, and burn-down meetings
  • Plan and execute project calibrations and QC according to specification
  • Oversee and assist in acquisition of hydrographic and/or geophysical survey data including survey control, inertial navigation, and USBL positioning
  • Serve as liaison between field unit, project management, and processing team to ensure quality and efficiency
  • Develop, improve, and ensure SOPs and best practices are properly utilized
  • Support data processing, analysis, and reporting efforts including oversight of team
  • Perform geospatial analyses
  • Administer data management practices and ensure QC of data management
  • Train and mentor junior staff
  • Coordinate with operations for successful engagement, operation, and return/reset of survey equipment
  • Review project specifications to ensure that survey data and results meet or exceed expectations
  • Assemble project deliverables

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, geomatics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in hydrographic surveys
  • Experience leading and executing hydrographic survey projects, communicating with survey team, and mentoring junior staff members.
  • Demonstratable knowledge, understanding, and application of NOAA, USACE, and IHO survey specifications
  • Proficiency in industry standard survey software including, but not limited to Caris HIPS/SIPS, Sonarwiz, Hypack, POSPac, QPS Qinsy
  • Proficiency in GIS applications (ArcPro/ArcGIS), databases, MS Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with hydrographic and geophysical processing and interpretation software
  • In-depth experience using GIS applications for planning, data analysis, production, QC, and visualization of results
  • Experience in survey systems integration, calibration, and QC documentation 
  • MS office, Windows OS

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Firm understanding of geospatial concepts including, but not limited to Geodesy, Hydrography, Topography
  • Understanding and interest in nautical charting, subsea survey, GIS and remote sensing
  • Good communication skills & professionalism
  • Aptitude for leading a team with clear direction and routine engagement
  • Can maintain productivity while performing repetitive tasks
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Desire and flexibility to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Ability to learn from mistakes and take constructive criticism
  • Ability to work well within a team environment, and independently
  • Ability to maintain a professional and positive demeanor in times of stress
  • Strong writing skills
  • Self-motivated

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform field work including travel, weekends, extended field missions, and the physical ability to lift objects over 50lbs
  • Travel and fieldwork will be required; Travel as needed and adhere to a non-traditional work schedule to assist in field operations

Certifications / Licenses:

  • Hydrographer certification (NSPS-THSOA CH or IHO Cat A or Cat B) is preferred but not required
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
