Overview

NV5's Andover, MA office has a great opportunity for a senior level mechanical engineer with an interest in project management for our Science and Technology group. In this role, you will have a full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments. The Senior Mechanical Engineer/PM will plan and develop engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial problem which has an important effect on major organizational problems. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation and development of novel concepts and approaches. Work at this level usually requires extensive progressive experience. Supervision received is essentially administrative. With assignments given in terms of broad general objective and limits. The Senior Mechanical Engineer/Project Manager will mentor more junior engineers and designers and work closely with the Group Leader(s) to ensure that company goals and guidelines are maintained.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of experience designing and managing projects independently and has a thorough understanding of the principles of the discipline he/she is designing. They may have some progressive APM or project management experience, specifically within the science and technology sector and have established client contacts in S&T. PE is required. Must be able to commit to a hybrid work schedule with at least 3 days in the Andover, MA office.

Responsibilities

  • In a supervisory capacity, a) plans, develops, coordinates, and directs several large and important projects or a project of major scope and importance, or b) is responsible for the entire engineering program of an organization when the program is of limited complexity and scope.

  • As an individual researcher or worker, conceives, plans, and conducts research in problem areas of considerable scope and complexity. The problem must be approached through a series of complete and conceptually related studies are difficult to define, require unconventional or novel approaches, and require sophisticated research techniques. Available guides and precedents contain critical gaps, are only partially related to the problem or may be largely lacking due to the novel character of the project. At this level, the individual researcher generally will have contributed inventions, new designs or techniques which are of material significance in the solution of important problems.

  • As a staff specialist, serves as the specialist for the organization (division or company) in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for an assigned area of responsibility (i.e., subject matter, function, type of facility or equipment, or product).

  • Directs the preparation of proposals in a timely manner and submits to the client.

  • Directs presentations.

  • Responsible for client management plans to develop and retain clients.

  • Assists in the development of and supports business development initiatives to attract future projects from new clients.

  • Maintain familiarity with current industry standards, trends, and technologies.

  • Has a general knowledge of all disciplines so that potential issues can be identified and addressed.

  • Works with minimal direction or supervision through demonstrated success with similar project responsibilities.

  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate from an engineering curriculum accredited by the Accreditation for Engineering and Technology (A.E.T.) or from a non-accredited engineering curriculum or related engineering science or with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of ten (10) years' experience designing and managing projects independently and has a thorough understanding of the principles of the discipline he/she is designing.
  • Combination of consulting engineering experience (10 YOE) and assistant project management or project management experience is preferred.
  • Experience in Science and Technology projects is required.
  • Must have a general understanding of design and commissioning project requirements.
  • PE License required.
  • Must be able to travel to worksites as needed or required.
  • Must have the ability to cultivate effective relationships with clients and vendors.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to identify, assess and nurture business development opportunities.
  • Must keep current through continuing education.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the operation of a computer, AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Must have a professional demeanor and excellent presentation skills.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to positively interact with staff at every level of the organization.
  • Must be able to commit to a hybrid work schedule with at least 3 days in the Andover, MA office.

Professional Activities:

  • Must be at least a member and on a committee of one (1) trade specific organization (ASHRAE, ASPE, AIA, etc.). 
  • Must be ready to deliver at least one (1) existing prepared AIA credit presentation or white paper or article per year.

Physical Requirements:

  • This is a full-time position (40 hours per week, Monday – Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm), with the ability to work on-call and extended hours (including after hours, holidays and weekends). The job is performed primarily in an indoor office environment with occasional driving to commercial and institutional job site locations and outdoor activities at the site (including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and buildings).
